Florida Security Guard Study Guide

Florida unarmed officers are required to sit through 40 hours of classroom instruction prior to applying for Florida's Class "D" unarmed license. Before 2012, applicants were allowed to take the last 16 hours of the training after applying for a license. That has changed and applicants must now take all 40 hours at a licensed Class "DS" school or training facility before they apply for the Class "D" license.

Once licensed, Class "D" officers are not required by the state to participate in continuing education. A Class "D" license may be renewed with no additional education. Security agencies may require officers to participate in continuing education as a condition of continued employment but the state does not have this same stipulation.

Those who take Class "D" classes should expect to be taught about applicable Florida statutes and legal issues; first aid and fire prevention; interview concepts and the writing of reports; communications, prevention and patrol techniques; and, professional conduct.
